I also want to express my gratitude to our 2022 participants and sponsors. Thank you to all our Honorees for accepting our invitation to be part of our history and supporting the Gala. Gracias. I want to thank the Gala’s Planning Committee for supporting our honorees and our Gala. Their support has been essential in the always stressful work of implementing a successful event. Thank you Círculo’s Board members, staff, colleagues, volunteers and friends for supporting the journal, the raffle and selling tickets. I also want to give a special thanks to Leslie Kringel, Gala Coordinator, as well as Nancy Iglesias, our consultant for the Gala. As always, I want to thank my family for their encouragement. They have helped me to face the many difficulties that I have encountered this past year and over the years. Gracias Sarah Brewster, my partner in work and in life. Gracias por todo, thank you for everything. You continue to inspire me and I enjoy working with you every day. Gracias to my deceased parents, brother, niece and sister-in-law. I miss them. They have always inspired me in my difficult times. I want to thank my three children, Deborah, Daniel and Gil Miguel for their support. They share not only my happy moments but also my challenging ones and they continue to give me encouragement to persevere. I continue to enjoy spending time with my grandchildren, my precious Rebecca, Sofía, Giuliana, Isak, Gabriella and Sebastián. My special thoughts are with Barbara Dubow Bernardino, Co-Founder of Círculo de la Hispanidad. She passed away in August 2021 and is deeply missed. Her contributions to our organization, the Hispanic Community and the community at large, are countless. Without Barbara, the mother of my children, Círculo de la Hispanidad could not have been founded. I am grateful forever!!! You will always be close to my heart.

Message from the Founder & Executive Director Círculo de la Hispanidad Gil Bernardino

This past year has not been without challenges. Certainly, the pandemic has continued to impact our lives in big and small ways.

Our last Gala was in 2019, more than three years ago. During those years we had to face a pandemic – Covid-19 – that brought a lot of tragedy in our county, state and country (1,000,000 deaths). We lost friends and family members, the most vulnerable faced unemployment, hunger and many, many challenges. Certainly, we could not have the Gala. Círculo was able to support those in need, especially immigrants who could not qualify for any relief. We were able to support them through grants and donations to help them pay for rent, utilities and food. Our food pantry, that has been in operation throughout our history, distributed thousands of meals during the pandemic to individuals and families. Thus far, we have been able to sustain programs and we continue to provide important services to clients affected by HIV, mental disabilities, domestic violence, and families with limited resources. The good news is that we have not yet experience significant cuts. We continue to search for alternative funding sources to prepare for difficult times. Evergreen Charter School, funded with the support of Círculo de la Hispanidad, continues to grow. We now serve 850 students from kindergarten to tenth grade. We continue to expand and will serve 975 students this fall from grades kindergarten to eleventh grade. Sadly, we continue to have over 500 students on the waiting list. You may ask why I report the news of Evergreen Charter School in my letter about Círculo. Círculo founded Evergreen. Evergreen would not have existed without Círculo. While we maintain separate boards and funding sources, we celebrate Evergreen’s success as our success. In conclusion, Evergreen’s vision of providing hope and a future for children’s right to an excellent education is the result of the same vision and mission of Círculo de la Hispanidad. Thank you to all Círculo de la Hispanidad supporters, current and past, who in different ways, have impacted the establishment of Evergreen Charter School by supporting our organization. In the name of the many students who are and will benefit throughout the years, gracias. As the Founder and Executive Director, I understand the importance of Círculo’s staff and their contributions through our history. They supported the organization with their daily work and ensured that programs and activities have been implemented in a financially sound manner. Having good evaluations and audits allowed me to keep the dream alive. GRACIAS .

"Cambiar el mundo amigo Sancho, que no es locura ni utopía, sino justicia".

" To change the world my friend Sancho, is not madness nor utopia, it's justice".

A thousand thanks for all participants and sponsors over the years. You have helped us achieve our mission.

CÍRCULO DE LA HISPANIDAD 1980 – 2022

42 Years “A Remarkable Journey” 42 Años “Una Historia Admirable”

Thanks to you and to all who have supported us throughout our forty-two years. Gracias a todos ustedes y a todos los que nos han apoyado a través de estos cuarenta y dos años.

Each year I reflect back about our recent accomplishments that have come to fruition through support from dedicated staff, the Board and from you our friends and supporters in the community. We have much to celebrate as we reflect on 42 years of commitment, dedication and a deep sense of service to the most vulnerable people in Nassau County (Hispanics and Non-Hispanics alike). Círculo received its articles of incorporation in 1980. However, the history of Círculo began some years earlier. Círculo’s founder, Gil Bernardino, came to the United States in 1974 to discover the many needs of the Long Beach Hispanic community. Concerned about the oppression of immigrant populations, including Hispanic students in schools, and other underserved groups, Gil formed the vision of Círculo. Barbara DuBow, through her ideas, advice and support provided the essential tools for Gil to make the dream of Círculo a reality. Another key and trusted advisor who assisted Gil in developing the organization was Pat McCormack. In 1980, New York State awarded Círculo its first grant of $25,000 to operate independently as a youth oriented organization. It was difficult to open doors in the beginning. Círculo started with three employees and a typewriter which had some missing keys. Now, the organization has a team of over forty full and part-time staff and a sophisticated computer system including a technology center, as well as many other amenities thanks to the commitment and vision of Círculo’s dedicated staff, volunteers and Board members. Many individuals have supported Círculo along this “Remarkable Journey”. Former Senator Dean G. Skelos, provided the seed funding for Círculo’s Center about twenty-five years ago. His vision and support enabled us to think large and dream of a Center that would serve thousands and thousands of individuals and families for many generations to come. We are especially grateful to Eileen Mullin and Lance Roth of Non Profit Preferred Funding. They were instrumental in securing the loan for this project. Non Profit Preferred Funding purchased the bonds made available through the Town of Hempstead Industrial Development Agency. Welquis R. López, a longtime friend of Círculo, has also been very supportive of our organization for many years and assisted Círculo achieve its dream to build a Center. We want to recognize former County Executive Ed Mangano for his financial support to the Center. Through his support Círculo has been able to enhance the Center. Thank you. In addition, former Supervisor Kate Murray, of the Town of Hempstead, also has helped to support activities and programming at the Center and provided Círculo with funding in the past. Gracias Supervisor Murray for your support. We also want to extend our thanks to former Mayor Wayne Hall, Sr. who supported our Center including our Nature Explorer Classroom Project. We are grateful to all of them. As we continue on our mission to improve the lives of individuals and their families through a comprehensive continuum of social service, recreation, education, cultural, economic development and social justice programs, we are grateful for the special efforts of dedicated employees, supportive volunteers, Board members, corporate partners and friends who have helped us live our mission. Together we can make a difference. Thank you.

LEO FERNÁNDEZ

As President of the Board of Directors of Círculo de la Hispanidad and on behalf of its board members, I would like to extend my appreciation to all our 2022 honorees for their support and dedication to Círculo’s mission to improve the lives of individuals and families. Tonight, we pay homage to our honorees and thank them for their commitment to strengthening our community and supporting vulnerable populations. We admire them for their professional achievements and for their examples of leadership and service.

At this time, we also pay tribute to all those individuals that have made our 2022 Spring Gala possible.

Thank you to all of you attendees tonight for supporting us with our mission and vision. Thank you sponsors as well for contributing in large and small ways to the success of our journal and Gala.

Thank you, Planning Committee members, for your dedication and support. Your hard work has helped us to have a special evening tonight.

The Board would also like to recognize the staff of Círculo and thank them for their efforts and dedication to our organization. With your help, all of us together are working to make our community a better place every day.

Mr. E lmir T ulio C astro

Congratulations to the 2022Honorees

PRESIDENT Castro’s Carpentry Corporation E lmir Tulio Castro was born in Santa Ana, El Salvador, in a small pueblo called “Las Marias.” He is the fourth and youngest child of Elida Castro and Felix Castro. As a young boy, Tulio was hard working and dedicated to his studies. Unfortunately, due to lack of resources in his pueblo, he was only able to complete the 8th grade. He engineered his way, living in the countryside of El Salvador by creating handmade wheelbarrows and other tools, helping his father transport goods and work on the fields, cultivating crops as means of survival. In 1987, Tulio decided to migrate to the US by land to look for better opportunities for him and his family. At the age of 15, Tulio embarked his journey to the United States with his grandpa and aunt. A month later, he arrived in Los Angeles where he lived for a few years with his uncle. He immediately started working with his uncle as a truck driver distributing milk. He then began to work in construction. After two years of working and going to school, Tulio completed his GED and received his diploma. In 1990, Tulio applied to be a permanent resident while working in the fields cultivating asparagus. Once his residency petition was approved, his life made a huge turning point. He left his job on the field to become an entrepreneur. He began driving from Los Angeles to El Salvador, selling cars and trucks in his country. On one of his business trips, he met and fell in love with Blanca Castro who now is his wife. They met in Santa Rosa Guachipilin, a pueblo in which Tulio’s family moved to during the civil war. After this trip, Tulio’s life changed direction. He did not return to Los Angeles. He decided to go to New York where he saw more opportunities for his career. He arrived in Hempstead where he was received by his sister, Angelina Castro. His first job was in Associated Supermarket located on Fulton Street in Hempstead, now known as Key Foods. While envisioning his future with Blanca, his girlfriend at the time, he worked three jobs, in the supermarket during the day, a carwash at night and as a UPS driver over the weekends. He then left his job at the supermarket and began working in landscaping. He spent two years working day and night, with hopes of soon being together with Blanca, who was waiting for him in El Salvador. In 1994, at the age of 24, Tulio returned to El Salvador, and married Blanca. After a year, they decided that Blanca would also migrate to the U.S. by land. When time arrived, Blanca found out she was pregnant, but this did not change any plans. Once arriving to NY in 1995, Wendy Castro, their first daughter, was born. After much perseverance, Blanca and Tulio worked hard and brought their first home in 1999 where they raised their children, Wendy, Clary, Kevin, and Anthony. In 2003, Tulio decided once again to work in construction and realized that this was his passion. In 2006, he formed Castro’s Carpentry Corporation with only four employees. This year, Castro’s Carpentry Corporation celebrates its 16th year anniversary. It has grown to employ twenty-four employees, all immigrants from other countries, working in all areas of Long Island.

B orn in Montevideo, Uruguay, Anahi arrived in NY as a child knowing only how to say “okay”. While working several jobs to help her family, Ms. DeCanio (born Regueira) became a financial advisor in her early 20’s and had a career in finance spanning over two decades. A quintessential entrepreneur, Ms. DeCanio headed her own financial translation and consulting firm catering to select clients in Latin America and the United States. She also headed a luxury home accessories line. She purchased her first investment, a multi-family house at the age of 22 and a second property at 24. Her Wall St. background and real estate experience serve to guide and advise her clients as a real estate advisor with Douglas Elliman. Anahi is also an award-winning artist whose works have been shown in galleries and museums throughout the country, and her work is part of private and corporate collections around the world. Venues include the Palm Beach Armory, National Steinbeck Museum, Brown University, Art Basel Miami, and the Consulate General of Uruguay. Her artwork has appeared in several publications, most notably The New York Times, Time Magazine and Robb Report, and has been featured in several motion pictures and TV shows. She is the founder of eco-friendly art and design event eARThHamptons and bilingual media company Enie Media Group. She has served in leadership positions on numerous boards, most notably, the commissioning committee of US Navy destroyer USS Bulkeley commissioned in NYC soon after 9/11. Other board positions include The Boca Raton Museum of Art Artists’ Guild, The Art League of Long Island, The East Hampton Artists Alliance, and as President of the Long Island Chapter of National Association of Hispanic Real Estate Professionals. In addition to her numerous art awards, honors include being named Hispanic Realtor of the Year 2019 by the Long Island Hispanic Chamber of Commerce. She was also the featured artist for the White House Fellows Conference in Washington DC in early 2016. When not devouring housing data, you might find her covered in paint or exploring with her Nikon in hand. Her most rewarding job is being mom to two sons, and a daughter in heaven.

iovanni Alexander Fernández Dueñas is from El Savador. He came here during his youth. He met his wife, Lorena Del Carmen Fernández here in high school. She is also from El Salvador. Together they have 3 beautiful children, two girls and one boy. Samantha is 18 years old, Sarah is 16 and Abraham is 13. Giovanni held many jobs in construction, factory cleaning, and telemarketing. He also worked for some time in real estate and assisted borrowers obtain mortgages. His life changed course however when a friend introduced him to the food and restaurant business. Through hard work and perseverance in the food industry business he now owns two restaurants, La Fuente and a Bakery, and employs 50 people. Giovanni thanks his mother who never abandoned him despite the fact that she lived in the United States for some years before he was able to join her. She brought her son to the United States when he was 17 years old. His mother fought hard to help the family achieve and move forward. Giovanni is also deeply grateful to his grandparents who raised and protected him. He gives thanks to God for helping him. Giovani is also appreciative of his wife Lorena who has always supported him.

B etty R odríguez

President Betty’s Breast Cancer Foundation

O

O n October 22nd, 1960, I was named Betty Rodriguez. I was born in Bogota, the capital of Colombia. After finishing high school, I studied and became a pastry chef, with an emphasis on food conservation processes. In 1983, I met my better half, Samuel D. Cardenas. I also have three children and five grandsons. In 1995, I arrived in the US with nothing but a dream of achieving a better life for my kids. For Instance, seeing them go to college was my main goal; and they did so. During 2007, I received unforeseeable news: I was diagnosed with stage three breast cancer. I felt so frightened and scared about my family’s future. For a two years lapse, I underwent cancer treatment. Luckily, I survived; at the great expense, to see my breast being mutilated. The aftermath of such terrible illness created a sense of awareness in me; during treatment, I heard Latin women were impacted the most by this illness. For example, I noticed that Latin women felt terrified to get a mammogram, wrongly assuming they already have cancer. I knew I must help to awake a sense of awareness in our community. Hence, I volunteered for such a purpose through Adelphi University. In 2010, I started taking classes on how to become a volunteer and learn the dynamics of being one. Subsequently, the volunteering experience led me to become involved in community leadership. In 2016, I achieved a Parents Leadership Initiative Mention (PLI) of Long Island. At the same time, I decided to encourage the community through a mammogram transportable vehicle also known as a scan van. This awareness van has been expanding throughout New York City metro area, as well as Nassau, and Suffolk County. Consequently, due to the unknown migratory status of Latin communities in such mentioned areas; I realized that community has a bigger sense of trust in their local diplomatic missions. Consulates became a bridge to help women be seen. To illustrate this, the Colombian Consulate program at the New York City mission called Colombia Nos Une enables women to get their mammograms on the embassy’s grounds. Back in 2017, my further pursuit to help the community included me becoming a volunteer at the NYU Langone Hospital, in the Oncology area. A good example of my volunteering duties, and with the help of modern technologies, are the non-official translation services that I contribute to the multicultural patients across the hospital. As COVID-19 impacted the world onwards and due to the mobility restrictions I have embarked on a new project, my book. Its title is “¿Por qué a mí? Siempre hay una esperanza” or Why me? There is always hope. My memoir describes the struggle with illness, the fear of uncertainty and death. Nonetheless, it reminds readers to always have faith in themselves.
