with a rigorous academic education focusing on the environment, the arts and instruction in a second language Spanish, among other areas. Evergreen serves 975 students from grades k-11. Next year Evergreen will grow to 1,100 students and will serve students from k-12 grade. Evergreen has a

waitlist of over 500 students. The school currently operates on four campuses in Hempstead. This new facility will enable the school to consolidate two of its campuses and serve our middle and high school students.

EVERGREEN’S GROUNDBREAKING CELEBRATION Breaking the Glass Ceiling On April 23, 2023 the Evergreen Charter School held its Groundbreaking Celebration with the Evergreen Board of Trustees, administrators, and staff members along with the Evergreen project partners, Consigli, Martin Hopp Architect and Northstar.

. vergreen Charter School is excited to announce that it has officially broken ground on its secondary school facility located at 33 Laurel Avenue in Hempstead. As one of the first Mass Timber K-12 Charter School projects in the Tri-State Area, Evergreen Charter School is a flagship Net-Zero-Ready 85,000 square-foot, 750-student K-12 Hybrid-CLT (cross laminated timber) project targeting LEED Gold for a mission driven Charter School Organization based in a minority community of Hispanics, Caribbean and African Americans in Hempstead, Long Island. Evergreen’s project has already gained recognition; the school was one of the winners of the 2022 The Softwood Lumber Board (SLB) and United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) Mass Timber

Competition: Building to Net Zero which showcase mass timber’s innovative applications in architectural design, and it highlights it significant role in reducing the carbon footprint of the built environment. Once completed the facility will include classrooms, shared spaces for science, art and innovation as well as a library, music/orchestra rooms, a multipurpose café, kitchen, gymnasium, breakout rooms and other common space. The facility will also feature green spaces at different levels including a rooftop garden and sports area. Evergreen Charter School, a free public school, was founded in 2009 by Gil Bernardino and Dr. Sarah Brewster with the help of many community advocates. The school was created to provide students

Evergreen believes in building sustainable communities with sustainable carbon footprints. As a school focusing on social uplift and providing key community infrastructure in a marginalized neighborhood, the project follows an ambitious agenda in both introducing sustainable design goals and implementing far-ranging community facilities within a limited cost constraint – serving as an important, replicable proof of concept demonstrating that design excellence, and Mass Timber, need not be out of reach for clients working with modest budgets.
