Charles Horn Retirement Didn't Suit Him- So He Co-Founded a New Start-up “The Great Gatsby” novelist F. Scott Fitzgerald famously wrote that there are no second acts in American lives. But for Charles Horn, a productive and fulfilling second act is proving you can’t keep a good entrepreneur retired. “I worked, I retired and I went back to work,” said Horn, who took six years off between retiring and un retiring. “I got bored and got back into business,” he explained. Horn is a U.S. Army veteran. He graduated with a B.S. degree in accounting and business law from New York University and worked for many years as an accountant. He had been the Chief Financial Officer of a large private conglomerate when he joined a group of senior executives that bought one of the divisions. “That was the beginning of my looking to not having a regular 9-5 job,” he said. About three and a half years ago Horn co-founded Best Ideas Group Inc. (BIG), with veteran life insurance professional Michael Giller. “About a year ago we started getting quite active,” Horn said. Best Ideas Group seeks to “enter into special relationships and/or joint ventures with different vendors and providers, sometimes within different industries (and to) offer uniquely valuable insurance and non insurance products, programs, concepts and services not generally available in the everyday marketplace,” according to bestideasgroupinc.com. “There are a lot of things that we are doing that are helping people,” Horn said. “We’re doing good by doing right.” Active Lifestyle spoke with him about what it’s like to go back to work at a time of life when others are content to sit back and relax.

What Charles has to Say...

INTERVIEW AL: Why did you decide to retire in the first place?

THE INTERVIEW

CH: I felt I was getting burnt out. Before I decided to retire and actually did it I was at going 100 miles per hour. If I wasn't in a car driving, I was in a limo being taken to an airport, I traveled hundreds of thousands of miles doing deals all over the country. We won an award from a major estate planning organization as the most influential company in the insurance world. As a result of that our phone never stopped ringing, And I got burnt out good. I literally retired from 100 mph to zero, which is a mistake especially if you are extremely active.
